A family in Crystal Lake, Illinois, is overjoyed after being reunited with their cherished Bernese Mountain dog, Charlie, who went missing for nearly a week.

This joyful reunion was made possible by the wonders of modern technology.

Charlie, a two-year-old Bernese Mountain dog, vanished on December 30, leaving the Belmonte family worried and anxious.

David Nowak, a family member, had let their three dogs out that morning, but only two returned.

“He just took off. I start looking for him after five minutes. I lost him for just five minutes,” Nowak explained.

The last sighting of Charlie was near Huntley Road and Ackman Road, and it was believed he had been chasing another animal when he disappeared.

Despite being a smart dog familiar with the area, his absence was deeply felt.

“It was devastating, it was so hard, we couldn’t sleep or do anything really,” said Kate Belmonte.

The family, along with their supportive neighbors, distributed flyers and searched tirelessly for Charlie.

As days passed with no sign of him, they decided to enlist professional help.

A local pet recovery team and drone operators brought in drones to assist in the search on Sunday.

To everyone’s relief, a drone equipped with thermal technology located Charlie in a grassy area less than a mile from home.

Video footage captured the moment the drone honed in on Charlie, who was sitting quietly in the grass.

Unfortunately, Charlie appeared to have been hit by a car, resulting in a broken femur.

However, he underwent surgery on Monday and is now on the road to recovery.

Belmonte recounted the emotional reunion, “The moment he was walking to us, we both just started ugly crying and had our arms out. It was just the best feeling ever.”

She expressed gratitude to those who braved the cold to help find Charlie, emphasizing the role of technology in their happy ending.

“They came out in the bitter cold for hours to help find him (with no leads at all even where to look) it’s truly a miracle,” she said.

Known for their good-natured and affectionate demeanor, Bernese Mountain dogs like Charlie are beloved family members, and this tale of reunion is a testament to the power of community and innovation.
