One young man’s split-second decision turned a frightening Monday morning into a story of courage and quick thinking. While stepping out for a break at Ya Bricks Snacks and Tobacco in St. Paul’s Dayton’s Bluff neighborhood, Ebro Ahmed noticed a school bus rolling away with no driver at the wheel.

The 27-year-old Eritrean-American ran toward the moving bus, grabbed the open door, and swung himself inside. Within moments he brought the vehicle safely to a stop, protecting the eighteen students and their driver who had suffered a seizure.

“I just did what anyone would do,” Ahmed said later, still modest about his heroic move.
