In this groundbreaking trial, 61 participants engaged in a structured exercise regimen that lasted two years. The results were astonishing, showing that their heart activity mirrored that of individuals 20 years younger.
The training program started gently, gradually increasing in intensity. Months 6 to 10 marked the peak of the exercise load, while the second year focused on maintaining moderate intensity. Participants engaged in two interval training sessions weekly, complemented by an hour of enjoyable activities like cycling or hiking. At its peak, the regimen required 5-6 hours of exercise per week, which was later reduced to about 4 hours during the maintenance phase.
It’s noteworthy that even the maintenance phase exceeded typical government exercise recommendations. One of the study’s authors emphasized that “exercise should be thought of as personal hygiene—to be done with the same routine urgency as brushing one’s teeth or showering.”
A critical insight from the study is that middle-aged individuals who have consistently exercised throughout their lives enjoy heart health akin to that of a 30-year-old. However, even those without a lifelong exercise habit can achieve similar benefits in just two years.
The study does, however, acknowledge that there are limitations to what exercise can achieve. Starting a moderate-intensity exercise program at age 65 or older may not reverse the heart’s stiffening and shrinkage from previous sedentary lifestyles. This highlights the importance of intervening with lifestyle changes during middle age to maximize cardiac health benefits.
