Fan Gives Argentina Jersey To Homeless Man So He Can Celebrate World Cup Win Too [Video]

Argentina has been battling inflation and an economic crisis. Winning the 2022 World Cup is a ray of hope for Argentinians.  And one heartwarming scene of a homeless man being gifted with the team’s jersey (with a #10 print — Lionel Messi’s number) so he could join in the celebration is a perfect symbolization of what Argentina is experiencing now.

The man drops to his knees as he wears it, tears streaming down his face. He makes the sign of the cross, thanks God, and cheers ‘vamos, vamos’ [let’s go, let’s go]. 

All around him, everyone cheered and celebrated.  He receives hugs from the other Argentinian team supporters.

The homeless man is just one of the many who has been given hope in the midst of financial strife and poverty.

He joins the celebration with renewed vigor to go at it again, fight again for he knows there is light at the end of the tunnel.  Just like the team who started with losses but would emerge as champions.

A commenter wrote, “For him to feel included in the celebrations when he would have otherwise been an outsider in his own country” while another added, ‘When people complain about what good does football bring, or why should I care? It’s because of moments like this. It does matter.’

It was a kind gesture that brought tears to a lot of eyes.

In a Habitat for Humanity estimate, the man is one of the more than 40 percent of the Argentinian population that lives in poverty.  They are commonly found in the streets of the cities of Argentina.  Being made part of the World Cup victory made him feel included in a society that may have made him invisible.

One comment summarizes the heartwarming scene: ‘We are social creatures by nature, and acceptance is everything. He is in the streets everyday and likely rarely feels he’s a part of something, but today he is in the streets celebrating with his country. Vamos, vamos Argentina.’
