Quick Smiles:

  • An off-duty firefighter delivered his neighbor’s baby in Indiana.
  • The healthy girl arrived before paramedics could get there.
  • The family calls the event a beautiful, unexpected blessing.

When Jasmine Mix’s contractions began early, she hurried to her parents’ house with her young daughter, believing help could wait.

Within moments, her labor intensified, prompting her father to call out to their neighbor, Nathan Huyck, a firefighter and paramedic.

“He’s hollering for Nathan, and luckily for my dad’s quick thinking, because Nathan’s a paramedic and an EMT, Nathan quickly runs and realizes I’m in active labor,” Mix shared.

With experience and calm, Huyck helped deliver baby Adaline Jaymes safely on the front lawn, all before the ambulance arrived.

The healthy newborn, weighing 6 pounds, 6 ounces, and measuring 19.5 inches, arrived after a rapid labor, cheered on by family and neighbors.

“Once the baby came out, I stimulated the baby and cleared the airway. I got it breathing and crying, that’s what we’re looking for in a childbirth,” said Huyck, who was delivering a baby for the first time outside of training.

The paramedics soon arrived and transported Jasmine and little Adaline to the hospital for further care.
