The Shih Tzu was walking with his owner when he broke away to chase some geese on the frozen Seneca River in Lysander.

He ran about 30 yards into the middle of the frozen water before his leash caught on the ice.

When New York’s Plainville Fire Department received the call about the trapped pup, they dispatched the local sheriff’s deputies and firefighters. The rescue crew from the Plainville Fire Department donned ice rescue suits and used specialized equipment provided by the Jordan Fire Department to save the pup.

The fire department received several commendations for another job well done.

One comment read, “Great job rescuers!! Man or beast (doggie) doesn’t matter to you!!” Another commenter wrote, “Thank you to everyone who helped save this little dog! That is no easy task.”

Thanks to the quick actions of these first responders, the little pup was returned safely to his owner.
