Jenna Bush Hager has a fantastic sense of humor and loves to share the Bush family lore on Today with Jenna and Sheinelle. Recently, she spoke about a time she and her dad, George W. Bush, got themselves into hot water with her grandmother, Barbara Bush.

Jenna and George were at a tennis match, and she thought it would be funny to heckle the opponents. What happened next turned into a family legend that proves even former presidents aren’t immune to mom’s wrath.

“I was doing the worm and yelling, ‘Not today!’”

Jenna told Sheinelle. Her dad’s reaction? He thought it was hilarious and kept encouraging her, saying, “That’s my girl!”

Barbara Bush, however, did not share their sense of humor. Not even a little bit.

Jenna Bush explained that she and George W. Bush both received a letter in the mail from Barbara Bush condemning their unsportsmanlike behavior at the tennis match. The best part? Jenna wasn’t a child when this happened—she was already a parent herself.

“My grandfather really believed in sportsmanship, like being really kind and humble and all those things. I think my behavior rubbed my grandmother the wrong way, so she wrote me a letter.”

She explained that Barbara Bush sent a copy to both Jenna and George. When the former first daughter called her dad to discuss the letter, he had the best response possible—he told her not to worry about it because he thought the whole thing was hilarious.

But here’s where the story gets even better. The letter ended with a very specific instruction from Barbara Bush.

“And then it said, ‘P.S. Throw this letter away and don’t tell anybody about it.’”

Jenna then looked directly at the camera and said, “Oops!” The moment was pure Jenna—charming, self-aware, and absolutely hilarious.

Fans loved the story and the way Jenna Bush Hager tells all the family dirt with such warmth and humor.

“so W was still being scolded by his mom, even after he achieved the highest office in the land. I love this family so much.”

The story is a beautiful reminder that no matter how old you get or what you achieve, to your parents, you’re always going to be their kid. And sometimes, that means getting scolded right alongside them—even if one of you used to run the country.
