Free Music Education Lights Up Smiles for 21,000 Miami Kids

Quick Smiles:

• Free music classes now reach 131 Miami-Dade schools
• More than 21,000 students are learning instruments at no cost
• Young Musicians Unite reports higher attendance and confidence

Down in Miami-Dade County, educators are seeing how school doesn’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing. Showing up, taking an interest in school and the community therein, comes that much easier for the some 21,000 students benefiting from free music classes offered at 131 schools by Young Musicians Unite (YMU).

Teachers notice children arriving earlier, participating more, and carrying a new sense of pride when they master their first song. Parents say the program gives youngsters something positive to talk about at the dinner table and a reason to stay away from idle trouble.

These kids light up the moment they hold an instrument,

They walk taller, speak clearer, and treat each other with respect,

School leaders add that the daily music sessions have become the highlight of many students’ weeks, sparking friendships across grade levels and giving every child, regardless of background, a shared melody to call their own.
