Quick Smiles:
- The 250th anniversary offers a chance to celebrate the country’s shared history.
- George W. Bush says democracy can self-correct through hard times.
- He encourages Americans to vote and stay involved in civic life.
Former President George W. Bush recently joined his daughter, Jenna Bush Hager, to discuss the nation’s future ahead of the 250th anniversary of the United States.
While many express concern over current social divides, the 43rd president remains confident in the country’s enduring strength.
Reflecting on history, the former president noted that the nation has successfully navigated many periods of intense rivalry and deep social unrest.
He views the upcoming milestone as an opportunity for citizens to refocus on shared values and the common good.
“One of the things about the 250th is it gives us the chance to focus on the common good and the wonders of this country,” he said.
“I am not concerned about the long-term health of our country. Because I’ve studied enough history to know that we’ve been through periods of intense anger and intense rivalry of ideas. But the beauty of democracy, Jen, is that it’s self-correcting.”
The 79-year-old leader encouraged Americans to actively participate in the democratic process as a way to facilitate national progress.
He believes that civic engagement is the primary method through which the country addresses its challenges.
“I’m going to encourage citizens to participate in the process, and if you don’t like what’s going on, vote,” he added.
“And that’s how America heals itself.”
By focusing on shared history and the power of the vote, Americans can move toward a brighter future together.
