The delightful moment when seven newborn golden retriever puppies howled together for the first time has captured hearts worldwide.
Mae, from the Philippines, was taken aback when the litter of three-week-old pups responded to her howling with tiny, high-pitched howls of their own.
Golden retrievers are not typically known for their vocal tendencies, making this event even more surprising.
Mae’s dog, Jessie, gave birth to the seven pups in July.
Mae described Jessie as “the absolute best Mama,” always attentive and caring for her babies.
When Jessie’s milk dried up shortly after giving birth, Mae and her family stepped in to hand-feed the puppies around the clock.
At three weeks old, the puppies were “crying non-stop since they wanted to go out of their whelping box to play.”
In an attempt to distract them, Mae decided to howl.
To her amazement, all seven puppies howled right back, as shown in a video posted on her TikTok account @jessithegoldie.
The clip, which has already amassed over 300,000 likes, shows Mae letting out a little howl, prompting the puppies to stop and then immediately respond with their own howls.
The mother dog, Jessie, appeared baffled and came into the frame to check on her pups.
Mae shared, “I was so surprised that they started howling because goldens aren’t known to be howlers. In fact, Jessie has never even howled!”
She added, “I tried to do it again a few more times and they would howl after me every time.”
TikTok users were enchanted by the howling puppies.
One user affectionately referred to them as “small sirens,” while another joked it was a “chain reaction,” and a third said Mae had “triggered the alarm.”
“Ah yes, the golden nugget council has SPOKEN,” another user wrote.
Golden retrievers are celebrated for their intelligence, obedience, and zest for life, according to the American Kennel Club.
However, they are not typically vocal and do not appear on Purina’s list of the most vocal dog breeds, which includes 77 different breeds.
Initially, a veterinarian predicted Jessie would give birth to three or four puppies, so Mae and her family were shocked when she had seven.
Despite the challenges, Jessie remained a devoted mother, always helping to clean up the puppies afterward.
Mae noted that seven puppies are quite a handful.
Fortunately, the howling phase was short-lived, as Mae said, “We were a bit worried that it would be something that they would always do, but that hasn’t been the case.”
“Now at four weeks old, they don’t howl—they bark and growl.”
