Grandma Mary McCarthy’s 85th birthday trip to Ireland began with an unforgettable moment at Chicago’s O’Hare airport. She was joyfully surprised by her great grandsons, Finley and Wyatt, who traveled from Colorado to join the celebration.

“I looked out there and I said, ‘That kid looks just like Finley!’” said McCarthy.

The heartwarming scene was captured in a TikTok video, where the boys ran into their great grandma’s arms shouting, “We surprised you!”

“I think that’s why we knew we wanted to make it a surprise, because she has the best reactions,” shared Sarah Giannini, Mary’s granddaughter and the boys’ mom.

Sarah explained how they planned the surprise, texting her husband to walk the boys by until Grandma noticed. The video captured the very moment Mary spotted her family.

“I’m surprised I didn’t scream louder, but I knew I was in the airport,” McCarthy reflected, recalling her excitement.

The boys even created playful ruses to keep the secret.

“I think you hear my youngest in the video kind of going, ‘Hee, hee, we were so sneaky,’” Giannini said.

Once the surprise was revealed, the family embraced their Irish adventure. They enjoyed dancing in pubs, visiting castles, listening to bagpipes, and even trying falconry together.

“I saw everybody do it, and I thought, ‘Well, heck, I’m gonna do it too,’” Mary happily shared.

For Mary and her family, the simple time together made the trip extraordinary.

“I don’t get to see them that often, living a thousand miles apart,” she said.

“But we had a whole week together, and in the morning they’d come running and say good morning and give me a hug. It was so nice every day, every single day. I’m getting tears in my eyes thinking about it.”

As the trip ended, Mary was already dreaming of future adventures.

“It was amazing. I’d love to go again,” she smiled.

“Drop of a hat — I’m ready. It will only take me 10 minutes to pack!”

Sarah shared that their next reunion is planned for Disney World, while the viral video serves as a warm reminder of the joy found in family moments.

“I’m a lucky, lucky, lucky lady,” Mary said.
