  • A higher education is a plus for work but countless men and women have no college degrees and yet achieved success.
  • Calvin Taylor does not have a college diploma but ended up as Board of Director and Senior Vice President at UPS where he started as a driver.
  • He and his wife now have a foundation that gives scholarships to students in need for them to finish their degrees.

Society is full of men and women who do not have college degrees but went on to be movers and shakers in trade, business, and in any industry.  But still, a higher education is a bonus when applying for work.

Calvin Tyler’s story is a testament to this.  He did not get to have his diploma as he had to stop schooling due to financial problems.  He had to quit school and start working as a driver for UPS.

But being a driver did not deter Tyler from rising from the ranks at UPS.  When he retired in 1998, he was one of the Board of Directors and was Senior Vice President of U.S. Operations.

It was through sheer grit and hard work that he achieved this status but unfortunately, not all can attain what he did.  This is what drove Tyler and his wife to establish the Calvin and Tina Tyler Endowed Scholarship Fund in 2002 for those who cannot afford a college education or those who run into debt trying to finish a degree.

What is even more amazing is that the couple went back to where Tyler pursued a degree— at Moran State College (now Morgan State University) in Baltimore.

They rant full-tuition scholarships to chosen Baltimore students.

The Tylers set up a $5 million endowment fund in 2016.  But this year, due to the COVID-19 crisis impact, they raised it to $20 million!

Tyler explained, “This is why we are increasing our commitment. We want to have more full-tuition scholarships offered to young people so that they can graduate from college and enter the next stage of their life debt-free.”

To which Morgan State President David Wilson issued a statement saying that the couple’s historic giving opens the doors of higher education to those aspiring leaders who are burdened with financial problems in realizing their academic hopes.

Wilson’s statement said, “The Tylers’ generosity over the years, culminating with this transformative commitment, is a remarkable example of altruism with great purpose.”

By paving the way for others to achieve their academic vision, Calvin Tyler has already earned his degree many times over.
