Animation Showcases Dog and Cat’s Touching Friendship: “Better Together” [Video]
- Animator Steve Cowden was honoring his late nephew with his family when his loved ones broke into song to lighten the mood.
- The spontaneous tune was so catchy that he ended up making a song out of it, followed by an adorable animation.
- The animated short showcased a dog and cat’s friendship through tough times, which illustrated how “some things are just better together.”
Steve Cowden, an animator from Portland, was able to channel his grief and turn it into something that brought comfort to other people going through a similar situation. His heartwarming animation of a dog and cat’s friendship has touched the hearts of many.
Steve detailed how the animation came to be.
His nephew had passed away unexpectedly, and their family was gathering in his honor.
It was then that his 22-year-old son Trent started playing spontaneously on the old piano. His twin brother Scott then sang along using random words, such as ‘Chocolate Cake and Ice Cream.’
“We had just eaten dessert and he sang the silly words, I think, to lighten our hearts,” Steve told GNN.
“I was upstairs with my mom and the tune was so sweet that I ran downstairs to be part of the moment. We all sang in harmony together,” he continued. “It kind of felt magical and seemed to help us. It was just a jingle at the time but it stuck with me.”
He said that the catchy tune started making its way into his daily commute. He started singing it and adding more lyrics, so he decided to make some recordings. In the 40 minutes it takes for him to drive to work, he was able to complete the song.
He recalled, “The song was so catchy, I almost immediately had the idea of making it into an animated short about a dog and cat.”
“Chocolate Cake and Ice Cream, Some things are just better together,” were among the lyrics to the song.
He later enlisted Trent’s help to record the final version with the accompaniment of another old piano.
Steve decided to work on the animation and spent most of the past year on it.
The adorable animation has since received an “amazing” response.
“One woman told me she shared the video with her network of 400 families who have experienced the loss of a loved one,” Steve shared.
“I’ll always treasure these times forever, and whenever I see your smile. Some things are better when they’re together, so let’s never say goodbye,” the song starts. “Chocolate cake and ice cream—I hope we never part.“
Steve has worked as an illustrator for 30 years. He has done art for a children’s book, entitled Cheese Louise, back in 2000.
He hopes the animation can be the start of a heartwarming animated series. He has already started creating new characters and episodes.
We can’t wait to see more of Steve’s creations!
