  • Book Fairies and ThriftBooks helped deliver 25,000 books to underserved readers in New York City and Long Island.
  • The books are being sorted by reading level to support local educators, Title I schools, and community partners.
  • The donation aims to help fill a major gap in access to reading materials for families and children.

A wave of literacy is sweeping across New York City and Long Island as 25,000 books reach underserved residents.

This massive donation was made possible through a partnership between the nonprofit Book Fairies and ThriftBooks.

Volunteers at the organization’s sorting facility are working hard to organize the titles by reading level for local educators.

These books provide essential resources to Title I schools and community partners that often face budget constraints.

“They told me a story where a teacher grabbed a stack of books of the table and started crying because she asked for $150 from the school to buy these particular books for her kids and was denied but found them at Book Fairies for free,” Schwartzberg said.

Courtney Collins, Associate Executive Director for Book Fairies, noted that lack of access to reading material is a primary cause of delayed literacy.

She believes this donation will fill a critical gap for many families.

“That’s 25,000 opportunities to provide what we otherwise would not have been able to provide, so it’s going to change so many lives,” Collins said.

By transforming used books into valuable learning tools, this initiative ensures every child has the chance to discover the joy of reading.

These efforts continue to empower teachers and inspire young minds throughout the region.
