The story begins when Sharon and Scott Jacobs were driving past private land in Spearfish, South Dakota, and Scott saw something he thought was a hawk—in, on, or partly hidden by barbed wire.

Upon closer inspection, they discovered it was a great horned owl in distress, its wing and feathers caught in the sharp barbs.

“We couldn’t just leave it there,” Sharon shared, remembering the moment they decided to stop and help.

Word quickly spread among neighbors, and soon a small group gathered with tools and gentle hands to carefully free the bird.

With patience and care, the owl was released and taken to a local raptor center for rehabilitation.

“It was amazing to see everyone come together like that,” Scott recalled, noting the outpouring of support.
