  • Snowplow driver sees a boy in just his pajamas on the side of a road at 4am.
  • He turns around, grabs the boy, keeps him warm in his truck and calls the police.
  • Local police and public works have hailed David Gehrke as a hero but all he needs is to know that the boy is OK.

Adverse conditions bring out the heroes out in the open.

When snowplow driver David Gehrke went to work on his 4am shift to clear the roads, he never thought that he would be a hero.

David wrote on Facebook, “As I passed Kilbourn Ave I seen something on the sidewalk. First i thought it was a deer or large dog. No, it was a child in his pajamas. No jacket or hat. He watched me and looked at me as I drove by.”

And David asked himself what the boy was doing there at that time.  So, he immediately turned his truck around to get the boy. “I immediately took my jacket off, wrapped it around him and put him in the truck. I called police dispatch. I got the heat blasting in the truck. I’ll keep him warm until we get help on the way,” David added.

The Police responded quickly, brought the boy, Maddox Pierce home and called his mother.

It turned out that when Maddox woke up, he thought that he was alone.  He did not know that a 14-year-old aunt was there babysitting him.  His mother, Brittany Weissenburger, was at work that time. He went out of the house without shoes, coat, mittens, or hat to go to his grandpa’s house which was down the road.

In just his pajamas, he immediately started shivering as temperatures were extremely low at 4am.

If not for David’s immediate action, Maddox could have frozen to death.

Brittany is grateful for David. She said, “I’ve been a mess since everything happened. He’s never, ever done anything like that before. I’m so thankful. What are the odds that he would find him at that exact moment that he pretty much came outside?”

The local police department and the Department of Public Works have praised David for his deed. But the hero can only say, “I am so glad I found this child. He could have frozen to death. PD thanked me for what I did. Today will be a day I will never ever forget.”
