In a heroic act of bravery, Lieutenant Corey Brooks of the Salisbury Police Department risked his life to save an unconscious motorist trapped in a burning truck.

When Brooks witnessed a tractor-trailer crash into the guardrails along Interstate 85 and burst into flames, he knew he had to act quickly.

“This truck can go at anytime and I was thinking ‘I am either going to die here with him or I am going to get him out of here,’” Brooks said.

Body cam footage released by the department shows the intense rescue, reminiscent of a scene from an action movie.

Brooks fearlessly ran through a line of burning fuel to reach the cab of the truck where the unconscious driver, Michael Williams, was trapped in his seat belt.

With urgency in his voice, Brooks shouted at Williams to get out, but soon realized he had to take matters into his own hands. He successfully unlatched the seatbelt and pulled Williams to safety.

But Brooks didn’t save the driver alone. A mysterious stranger, wearing an Argentina National Football Team shirt, appeared out of nowhere to lend a helping hand.

Brooks referred to this stranger as an “angel” and expressed his gratitude for the unexpected assistance.

The identity of this Good Samaritan remains unknown.

The danger was far from over. Just minutes after Brooks rescued Williams, an explosion could be heard coming from the direction of the semi. It was a reminder of the imminent threat that Brooks and Williams had narrowly escaped.

Thanks to Brooks’ heroic actions, Michael Williams made a full recovery. Reflecting on the experience, Brooks admitted that it was the scariest moment in his 25 years of law enforcement.

His courage and selflessness have earned him numerous commendations in the past, including the City of Salisbury Bronze Keys of Excellence, Salisbury Police Veteran Officer of the Year, the 2016 Blue Line Brotherhood Award, and Lion’s Club Salisbury Police Veteran of the Year.
