In the serene woods of Stevens County, Washington, an unexpected hero emerged when an elderly man found himself in dire need of help. On September 25, Deputy Wright of the Stevens County Sheriff’s Office was on a routine patrol when he noticed something peculiar—a dog sitting resolutely in the middle of the road.

Attempting to coax the dog into his vehicle to reunite her with her family, Deputy Wright was met with a surprising refusal. The dog had no intention of leaving her post.

After searching nearby homes without success, Deputy Wright returned to find the determined dog still occupying the centerline of the road. He tried once more to guide her to safety, but she had a plan of her own.

“She just stood up and looked at me, and she looked back towards the driveway and then looked at me and then she took off up the driveway,” Wright recounted.

Intrigued, he followed her lead, which brought him to a cabin where he discovered 84-year-old Keith Johnson calling for help from the ground.

Johnson, who relies on regular medication due to medical conditions, had experienced a drop in blood sugar that morning. While tending to his dog, Gita, he felt dizzy and fell, resulting in a broken hip.

For hours, Johnson lay on the ground, with Gita faithfully by his side, responding to his calls until she decided to seek assistance.

“I was immensely relieved that I’d been saved, and then I discovered that it was Gita,” Johnson shared, now on the mend in the hospital.

Deputy Wright, recognizing the dog’s bravery, told Johnson, “Your dog’s a hero, she saved your life today.”

Gita, a 13-year-old rescue dog, earned praise from the sheriff’s office, which stated, “We credit Gita for saving his life that day. The loyalty and heroism of our furry friends never cease to amaze us.”

The tale of Gita’s loyalty quickly resonated on social media, with users expressing admiration for both the dog and the deputy. One person remarked, “I’m not crying, you’re crying! Thank you, Deputy, for going the extra mile and listening to that pup!”

Another commented on the bond between rescue animals and their owners, saying, “Rescue animals rarely forget who saved them. Great job Officer Wright.”

Indeed, Gita’s actions echo the timeless tales of loyalty and courage that warm the soul.
