A holiday drive through California’s Sierra corridor turned into a story of courage when a vehicle spun out along Historic Highway 50, leaving a family facing a dangerous situation hundreds of feet above the ground.

Quick-thinking Air Force Staff Sgt. Ruben Tala saw the SUV in peril and immediately leapt into action, with his wife and daughter nearby.

“During that time, I mean, I think it’s the adrenaline kicking in,” he explained after the rescue.

Compelled by worry for his own family, Tala braved the drop and rushed to secure the SUV. Several kindhearted strangers joined, together helping the driver, his wife, and their two dogs out of harm’s way.

“I thought about my wife and my daughter,” Tala said. “What if there’s a family in that car? Somebody has to help.”

The rescue turned heartfelt when Tala discovered one of the dogs shared his daughter’s name, Luna, making the connection even more touching.
