  • 81 years ago a single melted candy bar revealed the secret to faster, safer cooking
  • A self-taught engineer’s accidental discovery now sits in nearly every kitchen worldwide
  • One curious moment in 1945 still brings families together around warm meals every day

Eighty-one years ago today, the microwave oven received its patent thanks to the keen observation of Percy Spencer. While working with radar equipment at Raytheon, the self-taught engineer from Howland, Maine, noticed the candy bar tucked in his pocket had softened from the microwaves in the air.

That tiny spark of curiosity became the first deliberate cooking experiment with microwave energy. Spencer placed popcorn kernels near the radar tube and watched them pop into fluffy white bursts, confirming the new method’s promise.

Next he tried an egg, which burst open from the rapid internal heating, proving the technology’s power and speed. Within a few years the first commercial microwave oven reached the market, shrinking long cooking times into mere minutes.
