Quick Smiles:

  • A London café encourages orders in British Sign Language, connecting communities through coffee.
  • Heathlands school’s innovative design fosters a welcoming and visually accessible learning space for deaf students.
  • Silence Speaks introduces an AI avatar that brings sign language communication to new contexts.

Across the UK, three creative projects are opening doors for deaf and hard-of-hearing people in everyday life.

At the Carpenters Dialogue Express Cafe in Newham, customers order in British Sign Language, guided by helpful displays and supportive staff.

“The cafe grew out of that belief – a place where deaf and hearing communities meet naturally, over something as simple and universal as coffee,” said Hakan Elbir, founder of Dialogue Hub CIC.

Heathlands school in St Albans puts DeafSpace design principles into practice, arranging rooms for optimal sightlines and choosing calming colours to create an inclusive environment.

“It is amazing the difference that tiny details make and how welcoming the school feels,” shared co-headteacher Lesley Reeves Costi.

Silence Speaks, a UK startup, is developing AI technology to translate text to sign language on the spot, helping bridge gaps in areas from education to healthcare.

The system even enables personalized greeting cards that come with a unique AI avatar sign language message.

“Silence Speaks is more than innovation: it restores human connection,” said Dr John LeeAllen, NHS doctor and member of the board.

These projects prove that with creative thinking and compassion, accessibility can become a vibrant part of daily life for all.
