Indian Teacher Wins Global Teacher Prize

Rouble Nagi, an Indian educator, has been awarded the $1 million GEMS Education Global Teacher Prize for creating more than 800 learning centers for children in over 100 slums and villages across India. Her innovative approach tailors education to fit real-life challenges, offering flexible schedules, hands-on activities, and making learning accessible even amidst adversity.

These centers have helped cut dropout rates by over 50% and brought over a million children into formal schooling. Rouble plans to use her prize winnings to establish a vocational institute and digital literacy program for marginalized youth.

It all began when she led an art workshop and met a child who had never seen a pencil. “I met a child who’d never seen a pencil, and it was the turning point of my life.”

Art remains central to her work; she transforms public spaces with interactive murals that teach subjects like reading, math, science, and more, involving both children and their communities in the learning process.

Her nonprofit, the Rouble Nagi Art Foundation, funds these open-air classrooms, helping make education a collaborative community effort. “Rouble Nagi represents the very best of what teaching can be – courage, creativity, compassion, and an unwavering belief in every child’s potential,” said Sunny Varkey, founder of the Global Teacher Prize.

Nagi was selected for the honor from over 5,000 nominations spanning 139 countries. The Global Teacher Prize, now in its tenth year and collaborating with UNESCO, remains the largest of its kind.

In addition to her educational impact, Rouble is a celebrated artist with more than 850 public artworks to her name. She mentors teachers and volunteers, ensuring the model adapts to meet every child’s unique needs.
