  • Steve Greig’s compassion and love for senior dogs and other animals came out of grief from the death of his 12-year companion.
  • Greig now has 8 senior rescue dogs, a pig, turkey, chicken, bunny, and just added two more dog rescues and 1 foster.
  • Greig’s Instagram account @wolfgang2242 won for himself the Shorty Instagrammer Award for 2020.

Steve Greig has a strong social media presence. His Instagram account @wolfgang2242 has more than 1 million loyal followers.

His menagerie started with his first adopted miniature pinscher named Wolfgang. For 12 years, the two were inseparable but tragedy struck when Wolfgang was killed by a car. Greig said on his Instagram post, “To give his death meaning I started adopting senior dogs on death row, the dogs that were getting overlooked but still had so much life yet to give.”

The first one was 12-years old with a heart murmur and 4 bad knees which he named Eeyore. Eeyore went on to be the “patriarch of Wolfgang 2242.” In March this year, Eeyore died at the age of 19.

His bustling Colorado residence now houses Betty the chicken, Bikini the pig, Tofu the turkey, Blizzard the Bunny, eight rescue dogs that are mostly senior, and the latest members of the ‘wolfgang’— 9-year-old long-haired dachshund named Juanita and Rocky, a 15-year-old heartworm-positive dog. Oh and the foster Kitty, a fluffy white dog with incontinence troubles. And the adoption continues.

The senior dogs and other animals come from rescue groups, local shelters, and animal hospitals. Greig also helps with the Maxfund Animal Adoption Center in Denver to look for families who would adopt senior dogs.

When asked why he continues adopting senior dogs when the time is running short for them, he answered with, “Love doesn’t have a time frame.”

And caring for the animals involves work. Every day starts early to prepare food, medications, and walks for the wolfgang.

In September 2019, Greig co-wrote with award-winning children’s author Mary Rand Hess, The One and Only Wolfgang.  This children’s book warmly shares the story of the diverse beautiful members of the “wolfgang.”

Greig’s posts have earned him the 2020 Shorty Instagrammer Award. To know why he certainly deserves the award, follow him @wolfgang2242 for the gang’s unique names, witty captions and adorable family portraits.  And keep abreast of who he gets to rescue next.
