Karate Hero Stops Thief, Launches Women’s Self-Defense Class

Martial arts often emphasize the importance of using skills responsibly, only resorting to them in emergencies. Recently, this principle was vividly demonstrated in Philadelphia by a karate instructor who intervened in a robbery “like a ninja.”

Stephen Venter, a black belt instructor at Action Karate in Northern Liberties, was preparing for a class when he heard cries for help.

Jennifer Romanelli, a local resident, was at a nearby dry cleaner when a thief snatched her purse.

“I’m just screaming bloody murder like a complete lunatic, like stop him, stop him, stop him, help, help, help to anybody around,” Romanelli recounted.

Venter quickly assessed the situation and sprang into action. He pursued the thief and used his martial arts expertise to resolve the situation.

“I shouted at him, ‘Drop the bag!’ He wouldn’t drop it, I caught up with him, I gave him a kick on the leg,” Venter explained.

“As I got him a kick on the leg, he dropped the bag, stumbled, and then he kept running away.”

Romanelli was taken aback by the swift intervention.

“Literally out of nowhere, like an angel, this guy appears, like a ninja, and he’s like ‘here you go,’” she said.

The timing was uncanny, as Venter was about to teach a “ninja class” at the time of the incident.

Inspired by the event, Venter decided to organize a self-defense and kickboxing class for women, aiming to empower them with practical skills.

Romanelli reached out to Venter’s supervisor to commend his bravery and express her gratitude.

Remarkably, Venter has only been a resident of Philadelphia for six months, yet his actions have already made a positive impact on the community.
