In a delightful twist on sustainability, the SoleSpace Lab in Oakland is making waves by reducing footwear waste through engaging cobbling and customization classes for kids and teens.

This initiative is not just about saving the planet; it’s about empowering young minds to see the potential in what they already own.

With billions of shoes produced globally each year, the average American is expected to own around 250 pairs in their lifetime.

Jeff Perlstein, the visionary behind SoleSpace Lab, is on a mission to change this narrative.

“Lots of people are concerned about the future of our planet, our impact on it, but feel kind of helpless,” Perlstein shared.

“So, this is a real opportunity for people to make a difference, to be very hands-on, and also express their creativity at the same time.”

The lab offers a unique approach to sneaker repair, teaching participants how to upcycle and customize their shoes with materials like vinyl, glue, and paint.

This creative process results in footwear that reflects the wearer’s personality, with designs ranging from Wu Tang Clan-inspired styles to those featuring the Golden State Valkyries’ colors.

Adding to the excitement, former Golden State Warrior Adonal Foyle has lent his support to the cause.

At an event called “Sustainable Sole” outside the Chase Center, Foyle donated some of his lightly worn sneakers.

“We pretty much used one sneaker a game,” Foyle highlighted, emphasizing the wastefulness of fast fashion.

The event, hosted by Perlstein and SoleSpace Lab, offered an outdoor workshop on refurbishing old sneakers.

Participants walked away not just with refreshed kicks, but a renewed perspective on reducing landfill waste.

By blending creativity with sustainability, this initiative is reshaping attitudes toward waste, one sneaker at a time.
