A Labrador retriever has become the star of a viral TikTok video, capturing hearts and chuckles alike with its innocent mistake. The clip, shared by @rourkey123, has amassed over 2.8 million views since October 1.

In the video, the dog is seen walking along a canal, carefully avoiding puddles. The water’s surface, covered with green algae, deceives the pup into thinking it is solid ground.

As the Labrador steps forward, presumably in pursuit of two ducks, it suddenly finds itself splashing in the canal. The dog quickly clambers out and shakes off the water, ending the amusing scene.

While this incident offers a light-hearted laugh, it also brings attention to a serious issue—the dangers of algae-covered water, especially cyanobacteria, known as blue-green algae.

Veterinarians Renee Schmid, Ahna Brutlag, and Lynn Buzhardt from VCA warn that these algae can be deadly for animals. “Cyanobacteria are present across North America,” they explain, noting their prevalence in late summer and fall.

Even without drinking the water, dogs can be at risk by licking algae off their fur. The veterinarians advise, “It is safest to consider all algae blooms to be dangerous and avoid them altogether.”

TikTok users shared their empathy for the Labrador’s unexpected dip. Emily Jones commented, “oh poor baby,” while @theircyarika noted the dog’s surprise, saying, “Poor dog was shocked that it isn’t grass.”

Others found humor in the situation, with @harpercult_ observing the pup’s “instant regret” and Vanmandave suggesting, “Needs the ‘father help’ [background] sound…”
