  • The Cavalier King Charles spaniel, named Billy, was discovered by an Israeli reservist in Rafah after being lost for over a year and a half.
  • The emotional reunion brought tears, hugs, and a sense of hope to the family, who had suffered significant losses.

In a remarkable twist of fate, Billy, a Cavalier King Charles spaniel, has found her way back to her family after vanishing during the chaos of the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks on Israel.

The reunion occurred on a Wednesday, more than a year and a half after the dog disappeared from her home in southern Israel.

Billy belonged to Rachel Danzyg, who faced the tragic loss of her brother and ex-husband during the attacks.

The dog was found by Aviad, an Israeli reservist, who spotted her wandering in the ruins of Rafah.

“I saw a lot of dogs there, but no purebred ones, and they are usually afraid of people,” he shared.

Despite her neglected appearance, Billy’s reaction was immediate and affectionate as she “ran up and jumped on him.”

Aviad kept Billy with him for four days, even including her in his family’s Passover Seder.

He then took her to a veterinary clinic where she received much-needed care.

“She had to be spayed and treated against fleas,” Aviad explained, noting the importance of further blood tests due to her prolonged exposure to harsh conditions.

The vet’s discovery of a microchip led to the confirmation of Billy’s identity, linking her back to the Danzyg family.

Aviad was eager to personally deliver the joyous news, describing how the entire veterinary clinic buzzed with excitement as he made the call.

“The day after I found out who the owner was, I went to them to return the dog,” he recounted.

The reunion was captured on video and shared on social media, showing Billy’s tail wagging as she was enveloped in hugs and kisses.

For Aviad and the Danzyg family, Billy’s return offered a glimmer of hope amid their profound losses.

“I am a medic and have rescued quite a few wounded and killed people, but it was definitely something special to finally give back to this family,” Aviad reflected.

Danzyg herself expressed disbelief, saying, “It’s a miracle. It doesn’t make sense … People didn’t survive. How did she?”

The story quickly spread across social media, with users celebrating the unexpected rescue.

An early post by Joe Truzman garnered significant attention, with viewers calling it “incredible news.”

“Omg. I’m in tears. This is incredible that the sweet dog is alive,” one person commented, while another added, “Oh, what a little bit of sunshine in all the sadness.”
