Loyal dog refuses to leave owner who was being taken to the hospital

While working in a hospital in Brazil, Dr. Igor Paiva Dias and his colleagues witnessed the purest expression of loyalty and love. 

It radiated from the heart of Mandraque, a wonderful dog.

When Mandraque’s owner contracted an infection, an ambulance was called to their home to transfer him to the hospital. Mandraque was present and stood by, refusing to leave his owner’s side, as paramedics placed his owner into the van.

Mandraque faithfully followed the ambulance as it drove away.

When the ambulance arrived at the hospital, Mandraque was still in tow. The dog sat outside the door while his owner was wheeled inside.

But Mandraque didn’t have to wait long for his owner.

Because pets are not permitted in the hospital, the caregivers did the next best thing. When Mandraque’s condition improved, he was taken outside to be closer to his worried dog.

The dog sprang up and started licking and kissing his owner as soon as he saw him on the stretcher, said Dias.

Thankfully, Mandraque’s owner was released from the hospital after only a few hours. Mandraque refused to leave his side as he was carried into an ambulance for the ride home.

Mandraque refused to go into the ambulance, according to Dias, so the driver was told to drive slowly so the dog could follow. Dias said the pair arrived home safely. 

Dias’ duty is to look after the patient’s physical health, so knowing that he had such a soulful, caring pooch looking after his spirit when he needed it most was comforting.

“Without a doubt, it was very emotional. The entire health team was moved,” said Dias.
