Quick Smiles:

  • A Texas mailman adopts a dog from his old route, defying the classic mailman-dog stereotype.
  • Floyd, a German Shepherd and Border Collie mix, finds a new home after his veteran owner passes away.
  • Ian Burke hopes Floyd’s story inspires others to adopt shelter pets.

The classic tale of mailmen and dogs has been given a delightful twist in Denton, Texas. Ian Burke, a local mail carrier, has rewritten the narrative by welcoming a furry friend named Floyd into his life.

Burke first encountered Floyd, a spirited German Shepherd and Border Collie mix, while delivering mail three years ago. Floyd, full of youthful energy, would greet Burke with enthusiasm, quickly forming a bond with the mailman.

Floyd’s owner, a Vietnam veteran, relied on the dog for companionship and assistance, as he was confined to a wheelchair. The veteran’s home became a cherished stop on Burke’s route, where he would offer Floyd affection and attention.

“He loves to hug me,” Burke shared. “He treats everybody like a friend, like you’ve known him forever.”

Floyd, affectionately known as Pretty Boy Floyd, was named after a famous bank robber, but his only crime was stealing extra belly rubs.

A year and a half ago, when Burke’s route changed, he lost touch with Floyd and his owner. Sadly, Burke received news that Floyd’s owner had passed away, and Floyd was at the City of Denton animal shelter.

Without hesitation, Burke was at the shelter, ready to adopt Floyd as soon as he could. Jenny McGee from the shelter remarked, “It was great to not only see that Floyd found a wonderful home, but also that the old myth about mailmen and dogs isn’t always true.”

Burke feels privileged to be Floyd’s new guardian and is committed to his care. His kindness extends beyond Floyd, as he is known to bring treats for other dogs on his route and even feed local cats.

He hopes Floyd’s story will inspire others to consider adopting pets from shelters. If a mailman and a dog with a gangster name can find their perfect match, there’s hope for everyone to find their own furry companion.
