  • The initiative creates a multi-state network between Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.
  • Total funding follows a competitive challenge that saw over one hundred sixty proposals submitted.
  • Finalist teams not selected for the top prize also received grants to strengthen their local projects.

A transformative project aimed at safeguarding health centers across the Gulf Coast has secured a massive twenty million dollar award. The Louisiana Public Health Institute will lead the Gulf Hub initiative to ensure healthcare remains available even during major disasters.

This partnership spans four states, creating climate-adaptive facilities that operate independently of the primary power grid. Over half a million residents will benefit from these hubs, which are designed to withstand hurricanes and other extreme weather events.

“We asked the people of the Gulf for their visions for a brighter future, and they responded with a flood of exciting proposals,” said Lauren Alexander Augustine, executive director of the Gulf Research Program.

“The Louisiana Public Health Institute’s project is exemplary in combining fresh ideas with innovative partnerships.”

Community leaders emphasize that local clinics serve as anchors of trust for the population. This funding equips these essential sites to stay open and coordinated when medical care is needed most.

“Through Gulf Hub, we have the opportunity to equip these centers to remain open, connected, and responsive when care is needed most,” added Shelina Davis, CEO of the Louisiana Public Health Institute.

This investment ensures that the talent and knowledge of local residents are utilized to build long-term resilience for the entire region.
