Quick Smiles:

  • Chris Doel built a powerful battery from 500 discarded vapes to energize his home for eight hours.
  • He repurposed it to drive an electric G-Wiz car 18 miles on pure recycled power.
  • Upgraded version now serves as his daily ride, sparking eco-friendly inspiration.

Engineer Chris Doel from Warwickshire, England, transformed waste into energy by extracting lithium batteries from disposable vapes.

He describes them as

“fully rechargeable”

and turned 500 cells into a massive pack using a 3D-printed case.

After powering his home, he targeted a vehicle and bought a 2007 G-Wiz micro-car for £800 due to its small 48V battery.

Over five months, he rewired it safely with sturdy enclosures for fire protection and secured insurance.

The car zipped 18 miles in two hours at up to 50 mph, seating two adults and two kids.

“I stripped it all back to re-do all the wiring, making sure it was proper sturdy. I made a big enclosure—worst-case scenario—in case it were to go up in flames.”

“I would want it to be at least somewhat contained and not be rattling all over the place.”

Now running Tesla modules with clever software, it’s his everyday transport.

Chris urges ditching disposable vapes for rechargeable, recyclable alternatives to build a circular economy.

“As soon as I get an idea in my head, I’m determined to get it done.”
