Man Found A Puppy Living In A Shoe and Couldn’t Bear to Leave Her Behind

When Goran Marinkovic walks the streets of Kraljevo, Serbia, he always brings food with him to give to animals who have no one to care for them. In his daily walks, Goran feeds more than 100 stray dogs and cats.

In March 2020, he found a little dog living in an old shoe. The puppy’s living condition tugged his heart and he couldn’t bear to leave it behind.

“Passing a narrow pathway, I heard crying coming from the rocks,” Goran told The Dodo. “She was cold, hungry and thirsty. I had food, so right away I gave her salami.”

The puppy was living near a pile of garbage and had been using an old shoe to sleep and shield herself from the elements. The puppy’s mother was nowhere to be found and Goran couldn’t find any other dogs nearby.

The puppy, whom he named Coco, immediately lay down on its back and showed him her belly, maybe asking for a rub.

Goran thought how exhausted Coco was. “She knew that I might be her only chance, so she lay down and surrendered to fate,” he said.

He picked up the tiny dog and took her to the vet, hoping she’d survive after being on her own for so long. But Coco didn’t give up and fought to live.

As the pup’s health recovered, her loving personality started to shine through. “She loves people,” Goran said. “She’s always cheerful.”

Goran posted photos of Coco on Facebook and his inbox was immediately flooded with messages. A number of people offered to adopt Coco. But Goran wanted to make sure she got the very best home.

He contacted his friends and fellow animal rescuers, who connected him to international animal adoptions. They found Coco a perfect family in Germany. Coco traveled to her new home after she had received all her vaccines.

Coco now looks very healthy, far from the sick puppy Goran found a year ago. She’s now a happy, fluffy dog who loves to go on adventures with her loving family.

“[Coco] has a beautiful home and she is currently on vacation. I get pictures regularly — they’re at sea right now,” Goran said. “Every rescued dog from the street who finds a home is a victory for me.”
