  • When Sammy Malloy saw a helpless hummingbird lying on the ground, he decided to help her out.
  • He brought the bird home and cared for her until she was ready to be released in the wild.
  • The bird, which Sammy named Flit, was able to recover fully.

A man from Houston, Texas showcased the best of humanity in him when he became a good Samaritan to an injured hummingbird.

Sammy saw the poor bird lying injured and helpless, so he took her to his car to bring her home. According to Sammy, he thought the baby bird would not make it in time, as she dozed off immediately inside the car.

“I built a makeshift nest from my neck gator, and headed home as fast as I could,” Sammy said. “She was in bad condition, and I was afraid she wouldn’t even make the drive.”

When they reached home, Sammy wasted no time and made food for the hummingbird — mixed sugar and water — and fed it to the struggling bird.

The bird seemed so hungry that she gobbled up the nectar in one sitting.

Sammy realized that hummingbirds eat a lot as they have incredible metabolisms, needing to eat every 10-15 minutes during the day.

Slowly, the little bird started to recuperate, thanks to Sammy’s TLC. He even named his new pet bird, Flit!

After some time, Flit felt at home, as Sammy treated her like his own baby. Sammy would let her sit on his finger as he sings her soothing tones. When Sammy thought that she was ready to be a bird and fly again, he motivated her slowly but surely.

He did this by placing a bright red paper-mache cover over Flit’s feeding dropper since hummingbirds are attracted to red colors. She would try hard to fly towards her feeder, and little by little, she regained her strength.

“It was like watching a baby take its first steps. There’s something almost magical about that,” Sammy said.

It was an emotional moment for Sammy and his daughter when he finally brought Flit outside to release her back to the open wild. Although he was sad that Flit would be leaving them, he was happy that he was able to help the once helpless bird.

“I was able to take a small, little delicate creature and nurse them back to health and get them strong enough so they can go back out into the world,” Sammy shared.

Watching Flit disappear as she soars above made Sammy and his daughter sad, but proud of how Flit fought to be well again. He hopes, though, that Flit comes back in the spring after her migration.
