  • Scott Harrison’s hand-carved carousel animals bring joy to visitors in Colorado.
  • The Carousel of Happiness is a testament to healing and creativity.

In the midst of the chaos of Con Thien, Vietnam, a young Marine Corps corporal found a mental escape by imagining a serene carousel in a mountain meadow.

Surrounded by the horrors of war, this vision provided a stark contrast to the harsh reality of death and destruction.

His sister’s gift of a music box became a lifeline, offering moments of peace amidst the turmoil.

Decades later, Scott Harrison, now retired, transformed this vision into reality with the Carousel of Happiness in Nederland, Colorado.

This nonprofit attraction allows countless visitors to experience a similar escape, riding on the intricately hand-carved animals created by Harrison.

“I started out just trying to treat myself, but then it just changed into something I could do for others,” Harrison shared in an interview.

For Harrison, the violence witnessed during his service left a lasting impact, leading to struggles with PTSD.

Despite attempts to find solace through alcohol and isolation, it was the memory of his music box and the imagined meadow that ultimately guided him towards healing.

“I thought that if I could actually start making that vision come true, it would keep me on an even keel and make me happier,” he explained.

In 1986, 18 years after his deployment, Harrison purchased a dilapidated Looff carousel and began the meticulous process of hand-carving new animals.

By 2010, the carousel was ready to welcome visitors in its picturesque valley setting, offering joy to over a million riders since its opening.

Harrison’s work, while intricate and demanding, is vital in providing a space of joy and reflection.

His journey was captured in the award-winning documentary Carving Joy, and the Carousel of Happiness podcast continues to explore themes of joy and wellbeing.
