Quick Smiles:

  • The Federal Electricity Commission is launching 1.5 gigawatts of new solar projects across Mexico.
  • The initiative includes a 30 billion peso investment to strengthen the nation’s clean energy grid.
  • The Puerto Peñasco solar complex in Sonora is set to reach 1 gigawatt, making it Latin America’s largest solar farm.

The Sonora expansion benefits from up to 350 days of sunshine each year. It also includes battery storage to help keep power reliable.

“We are delivering on a strategic objective: ensuring the country’s energy sovereignty through orderly, clean and sufficient planning,” said Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Additional solar developments are planned for Coahuila, with hundreds of megawatts expected to join the national grid. The projects also reflect Mexico’s role as a major silver producer, supporting solar panel manufacturing.

Each new facility will feature 30 percent battery storage capacity to maximize efficiency. The transition supports a growing population while prioritizing environmental sustainability.
