“Telling my mother that we had not found Aggie was devastating,” Carolyn Kiefer said. “We had failed.”

The following day, the Kiefers discovered their home had been reduced to ruins. The possibility of Aggie’s survival seemed remote amidst the devastation.

For the next two months, the family tried to rebuild their lives, but the loss of Aggie weighed heavily on Katherine.

“My mother told me that when she was having a hard time with her cancer treatment and felt down she would remind herself, ‘at least I have Aggie.’ Now, she was gone,” Carolyn Kiefer explained.

Then, one Saturday morning, a surprising voicemail from the local animal shelter changed everything. They had found Aggie.

“We could not believe it,” Carolyn Kiefer said. “I was convinced it was a scam—someone preying on my elderly mother and her devotion to her cat.”

Yet, against all odds, Aggie had survived and was receiving care at an animal hospital.

“We called all my siblings and shared the news. My mother started crying, my father was in absolute disbelief,” Carolyn Kiefer recounted, and soon they all “piled into the car” to reunite with Aggie.
