  • Growing up with two Navy parents, Racquel McCray decided to take the same path.
  • So she officially enlisted under the same specialty as her mother.
  • Presented with a rare opportunity, the mother-daughter duo were able to work together on the same ship!

Racquel McCray has been used to the military life growing up — she has two Navy parents.

Having observed her parents for her whole life, their success and ability to provide for her and her sister inspired her to follow in their footsteps.

Her mom, Master Chief Logistics Specialist Tonya McCray, had always expected that her daughter may want to pursue the same path, but she did not count on the perfect timing.

Racquel said that her parents did not pressure her into her decision. They even “didn’t believe her or take her seriously” when she informed her of her plans to join the Navy.

When they realized that she was serious, they fully supported her.

Tonya shared that she felt so proud.

“I shared some pictures with her and I talked about the experience, and she told me that was why she wanted to join the military — to be able to participate in things like that,” Tonya shared.

Racquel soon officially enlisted under the same logistics specialty as her mother. She was then excited to find out that they could both work together on the same ship!

So they both grabbed the opportunity and talked to their superiors about it.

Though it was only for four weeks, Racquel cherishes their time working together. She learned directly from her mom and witnessed the level of respect she has earned.

Racquel shared, “It’s pretty cool walking with her. Everyone says, ‘Good morning, master chief,’ and she greets them and I’m just smiling the whole way. I feel like a proud daughter.”

What a sweet moment! Both Racquel and Tonya were truly proud of each other.
