Mozambique Safeguards 23,000 Acres of Butterfly Haven in Mount Mabu

Quick Smiles:
- A new conservation area shields 200 butterfly species in Mozambique
- Local communities gain lasting protection for their forest home
- Proof that nature thrives when people choose to protect it
A government decree published on August 24th set aside 23,000 acres as the Mount Mabu Community Conservation Area in Mozambique.
This means that one of the wettest areas in southern Africa, known as the “butterfly forest,” will be protected, as will the 200-plus butterfly species that live there.
Mabu, and its somewhat isolated mountain chain, has long sheltered a remarkable variety of life, from rare butterflies to ancient trees.
