  • A hairless senior Chihuahua named Mr. Happy Face won the title of the World’s Ugliest Dog.
  • His mom, Jeneda Benally hopes that Mr. Happy Face inspires others to adopt senior dogs and those with physical imperfections.
  • Jeneda said Mr. Happy Face is perfect.

Senior rescue Mr. Happy Face is a hairless Chinese-crested-Chihuahua mix adopted by musician Jeneda Benally in 2021.

A lot of people passed up on adopting a senior dog like Mr. Happy Face as he needed long-term medications to treat multiple tumors and other conditions.  But to Jeneda, when the pup happily hobbled up to her and chose her, she vowed that the pup would be loved enough for him to forget his awful previous life.

And who would have thought that just recently, Mr. Happy Face won as the World’s Ugliest Dog and now has the “barking” rights to the title. The contest where most of the contenders were rescued dogs, held in Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds and Event Center in Petaluma, California “celebrates the imperfections that make all dogs special and unique.”

Jeneda hopes that Mr. Happy Face would serve as inspiration for others to give senior dogs a chance and look past the dogs’ age and physical limitations.

“I believe that this humble soul is also being an example, in subtle ways, to help humans realize that even old dogs need love and a family, too. Love, kindness and mommy kisses have helped him defy the anticipated short life that we all expected him to have with our family,” Jeneda added.

The proud momma and Mr. Happy Face won a trip to New York, an appearance on the Today Show and $1,500!  And after that, it is back to enjoying cuddles with mom, playing with his other four-legged brothers and sisters, eating stinky food, and living his best life every day.

Love indeed makes all things beautiful!
