Happy Tears
New Anthology Highlights Strength Amid Hardship

Quick Smiles:
- Writers share unique journeys overcoming homelessness in a new collection.
- The anthology spotlights resilience, humor, and hope through diverse voices.
- Industry professionals and those with lived experience collaborated to select standout stories.
A vibrant new anthology, More Than One Story, brings together 37 writers with experience of homelessness or poverty, weaving a tapestry of rarely-heard narratives about overcoming adversity. Curated by the social justice charity Cardboard Citizens, the book aims to transform the way society views homelessness.
The stories were carefully chosen from 135 submissions, with members of Cardboard Citizens joining industry professionals to read and critique the work. Established authors and playwrights such as Malorie Blackman, Chris Bush, and Joelle Taylor contributed, alongside new voices featured in the charity’s acclaimed monologue film series.
“When we asked for the voices of More Than One Story, we weren’t sure who would answer. What we received was a chorus – voices from every corner of the UK, carrying truths shaped by poverty and homelessness, by resilience, by love, by survival, joy, and rage,” said Cardboard Citizens CEO Chris Sonnex.
Despite tackling tough subjects, the anthology shines with humor and optimism, offering readers a glimpse of the human side behind the statistics. Sonnex, who brings his own lived experience to the project, emphasizes the humanizing power of sharing personal stories.
“It isn’t a book of ‘woe is me’. When you’ve had that lived experience you can take it with some jest, because it becomes a coping mechanism,” he explained. “There’s a humanising factor here; instead of being a statistic, you’re a flawed or funny or whatever actual human. That’s what I think will change the idea of what it means to be homeless, or to come from poverty.”
The anthology hopes to inspire the arts and entertainment sectors to recognize and nurture new talent from all backgrounds. As Sonnex points out, there is great potential among writers with unconventional backgrounds, waiting to be discovered by a wider audience.
This uplifting collection is a testament to the strength, creativity, and resilience found within communities that are often overlooked.
