Quick Smiles:

  • A young doctor who once faced a heart transplant now cradles her newborn daughter
  • Her fiancé proposed on the anniversary of the surgery that gave her life back
  • She calls every day a gift and lives it with boundless gratitude

Dr. Sanjana Kochhar always dreamed of healing others, yet life had a different lesson in store. At twenty, while studying medicine in Liverpool, she began feeling unusually breathless and exhausted. What she assumed was asthma turned out to be sudden heart failure, and the only path forward was a transplant.

“I was really unwell. I wasn’t walking; I wasn’t eating, and I needed oxygen. I was running out of options. And that’s when I got the offer of a heart,” she told the British Heart Foundation.

The gift changed everything. Four years later, Dr. Kochhar welcomed a baby girl in August, a moment she never imagined possible. She now treasures each sunrise, knowing the second chance she received made this chapter possible.

“For me, one of the hardest things to get through was accepting the fact that someone died for me to get a heart. That’s a really difficult thing to process because as a doctor my job is to help people get better,” she wrote.

Her fiancé, Paul, understood how meaningful the transplant anniversary was. On the first anniversary he proposed, turning remembrance into hope for the future.

“Paul proposed on the first anniversary of my transplant. It was a special day because we had been thinking about my organ donor, reflecting on the year and all we had achieved,” she said. “A year ago, I might not have made it, and here we were, planning our future.”

Today, Dr. Kochhar says she is “so grateful” for the life she holds in her arms and for every day that follows. Her story reminds us that courage, love, and second chances can lead to the most beautiful beginnings.
