  • Teaching a cat tricks has been considered near impossible.
  • One cat from Finland, however, can perform over 50 tricks!
  • Nipa, a Toyger cat, can walk along on his mom’s feet, jump to her on command, and even skateboard!

Most pet parents have come to understand that dogs can easily be taught tricks, but that it’s nearly impossible to teach a cat one. That’s why it’s really amazing whenever we see a trained cat.

Nipa’s mom, Tiina, works in a nursing home where residents love friendly therapy animals. Tiina wanted Nipa to also bring everyone joy and comfort, but she knew that the cat had to learn some manners first.

Tiina shared, “I saw @cat.school‘s videos on how Julie, the cat school teacher, has taught her cat tricks, and I got inspired so I signed up for cat school and learned the basics in clicker training.”

Nipa attended daily practice sessions for weeks until she graduated from cat school!

Armed with a plastic clicker and some treats, Tiina continues to train Nipa every day for about 5 to 15 minutes.

Nipa has since learned more than 50 tricks! His favorite is the “cop cop,” where he walks along his mom up the stairs with his paws on top of her feet.

Tiina said that training has been relatively simple once she understood how to do it.

She shared, “It depends a lot on the trick and how actively we train it. Some tricks are harder to teach than others. The most challenging trick was probably skateboarding, I think he could still improve his skateboarding talent.”

The well-trained Nipa can now join Tiina at her workplace. The residents simply love having him around!

“Nipa is like an ‘ice breaker.’ The seniors immediately light up when they see him and start talking to him and me,” Tiina shared.

“Even seniors that don’t want to join in other activities or talk to me individually welcome me when I have Nipa with me at work. Nipa brings a lot of joy to seniors and to see them happy makes me happy,” she added.

Nipa clearly “got talent”! Take a look at some of the tricks he’s mastered:
