Lucy and her family were spending a good time at their beach house in South Africa, when something near the shore showed up while she was having fun with her toy.

“High tide was coming in, and all of a sudden this octopus swam across in the shallow water,” Riette Creighton, Lucy’s mom, said.

Lucy, who has never seen anything like it, was stunned, dropping the ball to the water from her mouth.

The next thing that happened shocked Lucy even more: the octopus grabbed the ball in no time!

“All of a sudden we saw [the octopus] grabbing the ball,” Riette said. “I think my reaction was the same as Lucy’s! I’ve never experienced anything like it. This was just next level!”

Riette remained hopeful though, that the ball — which is buoyant — might still resurface as the octopus will surely have a hard time clinging to it as it goes deeper in the water. “We stood there for about 20 minutes, hoping the ball would surface, but no luck. It was gone!”

Albeit sad losing her toy, Lucy watched the octopus both in disbelief and wonder, thinking the octopus might have really wanted her toy. She hopes the new owner of her most favorite toy would enjoy it as much as she did.

In the end, Lucy forgot all about the little commotion with the octopus, and went on her day joyfully and playfully, like she usually does. The best part was, she got a brand-new tennis ball all for herself!

Should she thank that little sea creature?
