When downfall and joy happen at the same time, joy will surely prevail — here’s one case.

Losing out on an Olympic medal would break any athlete’s heart, but when Argentinian fencer Maria Belen Perez Maurice lost 15-12 to Hungary’s Anna Marton, then got engaged right after, she was the happiest!

In the middle of an interview, after being beaten in the women’s saber, Maria Belen got the biggest surprise of her life: her longtime coach and partner Lucas Guillermo Saucedo surprised her with a marriage proposal as he popped the question on camera while flashing a paper with a note.

It said, “Will you marry me, please?”

Lucas said that he asked an Olympic volunteer for the sheet of paper, who initially refused but agreed after he offered to trade an Olympic pin for the sheet.

“They (the press) told me to turn around and he had the letter. I forgot everything. I was like, ‘Oh my God,’” said the world No. 27.

Maria Belen rejected her 17-year partner’s marriage proposal in 2010. But recently, in that surprising moment, she let her guard down and said yes to him.

“We are very happy. We are very good partners. Of course, we have fights, but we enjoy each other’s time. We love each other so much, and we want to spend our lives together. We are going to celebrate in Buenos Aires with a big barbecue,” she added.

The COVID-19 protocols had restricted the couple to immediately leave the Olympic Village. They plan to celebrate back in their native Buenos Aires after flying home this week.

“I love her, and when she lost the match, she got very sad, so maybe this proposal should change her mentality,” Lucas said of her now fiancée. “I wrote on the paper in the moment. If she had won, no, I would have waited for the moment.”
