  • Arctic miners found an orphaned polar bear cub and decided to take care of it.
  • The polar bear grew fond of her rescuers and loved giving them hugs.
  • When the mining contract expired, the Russian wildlife authorities agreed to retrieve the bear to have its new life at the Moscow zoo.

A wild animal endangered animal should not be fed but when faced with an orphaned polar bear cub, miners just did not have a choice.

According to Andrey Groban, director of Royev Ruchey Zoo in Krasnoyarsk, “All we knew was that the cub’s mother died and that it was months ago when it discovered the base attracted by the smell of food.”

The helpless cub just melted the hearts of the Arctic gold miners.  It might have taken some time before the cub learned to trust the crew at the remote Severnaya Zemlya archipelago, but when she did, she became their friend and even loved bear hugs.

But the crew’s work contracts are about to end and they will soon leave the base.  They are worried that the bear would be left alone, vulnerable to attacks from other predators.  She would not be able to survive with her lack of hunting skills.

So, they left a large store of refuse for the bear hoping it would tie her over until they can organize a rescue mission for their beloved pal. As soon as they had contact once they were outside the base, they sought guidance from the Moscow Zoo.

Although it was too late for them to follow protocol on these matters, they still contacted Wildlife authorities on the proper form of action. With the information gained from the miners on the vulnerability of the bear, a rescue party was then deployed to get her and bring her to the zoo.

Gorban explained, “For right or wrong, they fed the endangered animal and through that tamed it. The shift workers saved its life, the cub had no chance to survive.”

When faced with saving a life or following the technicalities, the miners only chose life.  And when they had the chance to make its life better for its continued survival, they took it.
