Quick Smiles:

  • Six-year-old Maisie chose her own name, and her parents are making it official for her birthday.
  • Her mom Amanda Biddle says Maisie has never identified with her given name, Margaret, and has steadfastly used Maisie from the time she could talk.
  • The Biddle family received an outpouring of support after sharing their decision to honor Maisie’s identity.

Instead of toys, one Michigan family will surprise their daughter with a meaningful birthday gift: her very own chosen name officially recognized as her legal name.

Maisie, who was called Margaret at birth in honor of her great-grandmother, has proudly insisted on being called Maisie since she could speak.

“But as soon as she could talk, she would say, ‘No, I’m not Margaret. I’m Maisie,’” Biddle says.

Amanda and Dan Biddle spent years gently checking in, but Maisie’s answer never changed—she’s Maisie, not Margaret—and the family finally decided to make it official.

Her legal paperwork will be finalized before her sixth birthday, transforming what could have been a source of lifelong confusion into an empowering celebration.

The announcement drew warm responses from fellow parents and adults who shared stories about finding the names that fit them best, as well as those praising the family for trusting their daughter’s self-knowledge.

Amanda Biddle sees the gesture as more than a simple name change. It reflects her belief in listening to children and honoring their sense of self from an early age.

“When she’s excited, she puts her hands together, jumps and screams,” Biddle shares.

The Biddles can’t wait to see Maisie’s joy when she discovers her new name is officially hers.
