Quick Smiles:

  • Guaranteed daily recess, bathroom breaks, and water access for every student.
  • Movement breaks every 90 minutes in elementary schools.
  • Ban on silent lunches and using essentials as punishment.

Philadelphia public schools have launched an inspiring wellness program making dignity non-negotiable for children everywhere.

Advocated by grassroots group Lift Every Voice, the policy ensures no more withholding of basic needs, bringing joy after years of advocacy celebrated with music and dancing.

“I wish we had done this much sooner. But I’m pleased that we’re doing it today,” said school superintendent Tony Watlington Jr.

“When we think about children holding their bodies because bathroom access is protected, or sitting for hours without movement, or rushing through silent lunches, that’s not discipline,” Board of Education councilmember Kendra Brooks said. “It’s actually dehumanizing.”

The board also ended half-days, linked to improved attendance and brighter school days ahead.

Celebrate this step toward healthier, happier learning environments and share the positivity with your community!
