Cats and dogs are often seen as eternal rivals, yet an extraordinary friendship between a pit bull and a rescue kitten is warming hearts everywhere.

In September, Lia Salmai, 22, discovered a kitten crying under the hood of her neighbor’s car in Barstow, California. She brought the tiny feline into her home, but was apprehensive about how her “reactive pit bull” named Major would react.

Major, who is two years old, is known for his good-natured demeanor and love for attention. However, Salmai was concerned about his lack of experience with cats and feared he might “hurt her unintentionally” due to her small size.

To her surprise, Major displayed an innate gentleness with the kitten, now named Mr. Mittens. From the moment they met, Major “loved her from the start.”

Salmai shared, “I was nervous at first, not because I thought Major would hurt her intentionally, but because the kitten was so tiny and fragile. He has never been around a kitten before, so I wasn’t sure how he would react.”

“He saw the condition the kitten was in when I brought her in and just wanted to be near her. I put her in the tub with food and water, and Major just watched over her.”

“When I held her in a blanket, he would lay his head on me near her head, and they just slept.”

Now estimated to be around 10 weeks old, Mr. Mittens sleeps separately from Major at night, but during the day, they are inseparable companions, playing, eating, and napping together.

Salmai finds joy in their bond, admitting she “never in a million years” thought Major would become best friends with a cat.

“I love watching them together. He’s very gentle with her even though she loves surprise attacking him. Watching them makes me happy and I feel like I made the right choice.”
