Quick Smiles:

  • Pittsburgh International Airport is expanding its solar capabilities by transforming a former landfill into a solar energy hub.
  • The new solar farm will significantly reduce carbon emissions and enhance the airport’s energy independence.
  • The project is part of a broader strategy to innovate and improve regional energy solutions.

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) is taking remarkable steps toward energy independence by converting an old landfill into a solar energy powerhouse.

This bold initiative will see the installation of 4.7 megawatts of solar panels on 12 acres of land, once used for waste disposal.

The solar farm is expected to offset a staggering 5 million pounds of CO2 emissions, replacing fossil fuel reliance with clean energy.

PIT already operates a 23-megawatt solar and natural gas microgrid that efficiently meets the airport’s energy needs.

The microgrid uses solar power for daily operations and supplements with natural gas during peak times or cloudy days.

Any surplus solar power is redirected to local homes and businesses, further benefiting the community.

The new solar farm will bolster this system, reducing natural gas consumption and increasing solar energy distribution.

“We’re maximizing the use of airport assets for the betterment of the region—from air service to real estate development to energy innovation,” stated PIT CEO Christina Cassotis.

The airport’s future plans include a mini-refinery for sustainable aviation fuel, with the solar farm expected to be operational by 2027.

This development underscores the importance of PIT’s microgrid, especially in light of recent blackouts that affected major airports.

Such innovations not only prevent operational disruptions but also save PIT $1 million in electricity costs annually.

This impressive display of corporate responsibility and innovation is a model for airports worldwide.
