Princeton Innovation Creates Nature-Inspired Filter That Keeps Microplastics From Reaching the Atlantic Ocean

Quick Smiles:
- Alumni engineers created a first-of-its-kind microplastic filter inspired by water-repelling plants
- The device is already working in Atlantic City, keeping plastic particles out of the ocean
- Nature’s own design is helping communities protect their waterways and wildlife
Princeton alumni have designed a first-in-the-world device to filter microplastics out of wastewater at scale, and it’s already been deployed in Atlantic City.
The large implant mimics hydrophobic plants found in nature, which completely shed water on contact but also attract microplastic particles.
With the water moved on and the particles thusly removed, the ocean stays a little cleaner and marine life gets a helping hand.
